Couldn't Be More Happy

Hearing old Soviet codes On a dark September night Through the shortwave radio I wish that message was for me From you but these days we don't ever speak. Give me a message number station I've got the code but I don't have a key Give me a message number station Your hearts gone dark and I'm in way too deep Late Night songs on the radio Am station and in between they're talking UFOs Been out of touch for a little while Disconnection does us good It's always been your style Give me a message number station I've got the code but I don't have a key Give me a message number station Your hearts gone dark and I'm in way too deep You got a lo-fi state of mind always talking through the static gritty signal lines Why can't you say what you mean What you mean when you say it didn't mean a thing

See You Soon 03:40
Twenty dollars from a cash machine Walking is free but wine costs money Nothing fancy nothing strong Warms the soul when the day gets long I’ll drink alone tonight Think of you as my glass goes dry Tomorrow I’m on my way to you See you soon Hotel by the airport is too loud Thoughts of you couldn’t drown it out Only thing on my rooms TV Is reality and misery I’ll sleep alone tonight Think of you as my mind goes wild Tomorrow I’m on my way to you See you soon Six AM plane to catch Jump through hoops until I’m out of bread X-rays won’t block my way I’d jump over hell’s gate You won’t be alone tonight If it’s dark leave on a light Finally on my way to you See you soon

Don't know where i'm going but i'm leaving as soon as i can Leaving all the bills unpaid I’m sure you won't understand Been squeezing me for so long and i'm tired of being a stone Still got blood in here but it's mine so leave me alone There's a song that i'm whistling as I’m walking out the door So long landlord i don't live here anymore Too many empty tables and lonesome bar stools Anyone still here is in the back shooting pool I got songs for the weary just like i am But they don't want to listen they don't give a damn There's a song that i'm whistling as i'm walking out the door Shut off the lights i'm not playing anymore To hell with the consequence sometimes you have to leave Let the chips fall where they may let fortune tellers read All the signs you've been ignoring let them slap you in the face There's no directions in this life for winning this race There is a song i'm whistling and it shakes me to the bone Every choice is mine and mine alone Standing in line outside some golden gates I never was nice enough to get in the fast lane Too many rules to follow when i could have so much fun Too many things to worship to pick just one There is a song that i'm whistling as i'm walking out the door So long my friends i wish you lived a little more

Arsonist 04:04
The fire burned for days across the river from where we stood Destroyed everything we made all of the bad along with the good Pigeon holed without a purpose they took our jobs they took our voice Automated our whole lives disconnection never a choice You said we wouldn't be any trouble to the stakeholders the board or the analyst To build a world you need an architect to burn it down you need an arsonist Zero lives were lost the smoke ring souls that night were just machines The guns that fired when they found us killed unarmed men without a guilty plea You said we wouldn't be any trouble but to take us out you know we might be a catalyst To build a world you need stability to shake things up you need an arsonist The few of us that got away vowed to blaze a better world At least a footnote in history aline in a song, a point in the record You said we wouldn't be any trouble Just a small group of bleeding heart socialists To spin a story you need a media empire

Tell Me 03:28
Tell me how we met again I can’t remember Fuzzy pictures empty glasses Pour into a blender You had that funny line Everyone laughed so hard Tell me one more time Who we are Used to be apolitical now it’s hard to resist Spend our days throwing words to knock people off the fence Ok spilling blood until we see a face Need a change of tone need a change of pace Live in such strange times We’re all torn apart Someone should remind us Who we are Tell me how we met again I can’t remember Old friends and good times Poured into a blender Peace and love is a pipe dream If we go too far Stop to look back at Who we are
6.
Don’t worry now it’s just me coming in No strangers you hate no house to defend Somewhere in dark your fire still burns No light for years from lessons you learned Don’t worry now the water is warm Jump right in to the arms of a storm Learn to love Ike, Irma, Maria Sandy, Harvey, Rita, Katrina Don’t worry now you still have time Hate who you want hate isn’t a crime Silence the weak with something to say The deck is all stacked so shuffle them away Don’t worry now you can still be poor More likely in heaven than those shutting the door One more dollar in the offering plate Golden crosses licked by golden flames Don’t worry now your children are safe Guns for the teachers for students straight A’s Can’t everyone be armed to the teeth A thought and a prayer and a bullet for each Don’t worry now they’re not laughing at us Expert master of some failed apprentice Reality is we knew this before Jesters in suits spray tanned orange Don’t worry now our champion is here Wants to be king of a kingdom of fear Give him a crown only he can hold Light as a feather spray painted gold Don’t worry now its just me coming in No strangers you hate no house to defend Finally we did it drove everyone away First and alone declared ourselves great We’re all alone now isn’t it great

The Field 04:20
Thirty-one years things I’ll never learn When to listen how to read certain signs Kid causing trouble always moving on Waiting for the last minute running out of time Listen to the street lights humming Songs for days we try to leave behind Winter days are short conversations get to quick knowing something was wrong was to know when it was right One last call that I got from you I was so proud gonna be a dad Losing and becoming one at the same time Couldn’t be more happy couldn’t be more sad Listen to the telephone line humming For a voice I know I have to leave behind Memories are short I hold on to all I can To know he was gone you had to know what it felt like A thousand miles away from where I left you In that field that never lies Wind as cold as steel all debts are absolved Words couldn’t help but I guess they never tried No I guess they never tried Listen to the highway it’s humming Songs for days we try to leave behind Memories are short I hold on to every word you said So I can pass them on like a fragile candle light

about

Started writing this in 2016. I wrote the first song Number Stations around the time that the last EP came out.  I finished it in December of 2018 and then... I got self conscious about it.  Honestly I liked the album but I didn't know what to do with it.  So I went looking for some answers and I found out that there were none except to put it out and see what happens. It is almost cliche at this point to talk about how the music industry has shifted but I'd say that it is indicative of a bigger overall shift in our world.  One of the things I did when I was looking at how to "market" this album was to make a list of words to describe each song and you know what? It was filled with words like "miscommunication, insecurity, uncertainty, and change". This "shift" has been on my mind quite a bit I guess.
I brought in some folks to play on a few of the songs for this album.  The talented Nate Barnes played drums and percussion on Number Stations, Arsonist, and The Field.  Toby Wilson played Pedal Steel and Dobro on Number Stations and The Field. Matt Rosen helped out with Banjo and a slide part on Arsonist back when this project was just getting started.  Everything else is me or me using a really smart piece of software to create the sounds you hear.
